The IBM Notes Browser Plug-in (NBP) allows 32-bit Internet Explorer or Firefox web client users to access their native Notes apps directly from the web. Incredibly as it sounds this feature allows Notes apps to be run from within web browsers on Windows 32/64 bit desktops! As for security it still requires a Notes ID file and native ACL security applies. If Notes mail acesss is required while using NBP, then the user must use iNotes.

If your Notes apps run on Notes 9/8 Basic or 7/6 clients then they will work fine with the browser plug-in. Notes Standard client (Eclipse) features are not supported. As per IBM documentation, "The Notes Browser Plug-in allows you to work with your IBM Notes applications directly in a browser. The plug-in consists of components of the Notes client that allow you to work with your Notes applications, as well as components that allow integration inside a browser. The components from the Notes Client which are part of this plug-in are specific to the Notes Basic client; any features in an application that require Standard Client components will not be available when running that application under the Notes Browser Plug-in. Essentially, if your Notes application runs successfully in the Notes Basic client, it should run unmodified in the Notes Browser Plug-in." There are 3 different installation options:
  • Notes Browser Plug-in stand-alone (NotesPluginMin): This option does not contain attachment viewers, JVM, or spell check. The install file size is only 54.7 MB. i.e. NOTES_PLG_LIT_901_WIN_EN-CIQ96EN.exe
  • Notes Browser Plug-in stand-alone (NotesPluginMax): Includes JVM which is required if you have any application which has a Java Agent in it. The install file size is 146 MB. i.e. NOTES_BP_901_WIN_EN-CIQ90EN.exe
  • Notes Browser Plug-in with Notes Standard client: Allows you to run the Notes Standard Client and NBP on the same desktop. NOTE: NBP will not run while the Notes 9 client is running and visa-versa.
